Fan van het eerste uur Eric van Domburg Scipio van Popmagazine Heaven schreef enkele maanden terug terecht al een uiterst lovende recensie over Maison Mouton Sessions Vol. 1 & 2. Zelf ben ik Oddfellow’s Casino, waarachter David Bramwell schuil gaat, gaan volgen vanaf The Raven’s Empire.
David werd door de Maison Mouton kunstenaarsretraite in de Provence uitgenodigd om bestaand werk van hem opnieuw op te nemen. In eerste instantie in basale vorm van ofwel piano ofwel gitaar, waarna later andere instrumenten en stemmen werden toegevoegd. Maar meestal een stuk soberder dan de originelen. In het totaal nam hij 22 songs op.
De liedjes zijn vaak ingetogen en melancholisch. Maar David is ook in staat om een oorwurm als We Will Be Here te schrijven, wat meteen na de eerste beluistering in je geheugen nestelt. De schitterende opener Ameland kende ik nog niet. Het staat op zijn laatste album Prince of the Starry Wheel. Uiteraard was ik nieuwsgierig naar de link tussen David en Ameland. David’s vriendin Anne blijkt uit Groningen te komen. Samen met haar en haar familie bezocht David al enkele malen Ameland. Ook de tekst van Ameland is fraai :

through desert rains and winter sun
with a bruised heart I’ll come
then lay me down in the Earth I’m done
And the starlings all have flown
for the cold North Sea we walked upon
And the start of the affair
Under the pier you left me there

De nieuwe uitvoeringen voegen wezenlijk iets toe aan de originelen. Het wordt hoog tijd dat David eens naar Nederland komt voor concerten.
