Haar debuut Social
Call zette de achtentwintigjarige soulvolle jazz zangeres Jazzmeia Horn
meteen op de kaart. Daarvoor had ze al de eerste plek van het 2013 Sarah
Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition gehaald en in 2015 de Thelonious
Monk Competition gewonnen. Haar debuut leverde haar ook een Grammy nominatie
op. In Nederland bleef de belangstelling ook niet uit en was ze vorig jaar te
zien in Vrije Geluiden. Ook de loftuitingen in de schrijvende pers mochten er
wezen, zo schreef The New York Times over haar: “The most talked-about jazz
vocalist to emerge since Cécile McLorin Salvant and Gregory Porter both became
stars”. Haar inspiratiebronnen variëren nogal, van Mary J. Blige tot Afrikaanse
muziek. Het vervolgalbum Love &
Liberation is nog een stuk ambitieuzer dan het debuut. Horn schotelt de
luisteraar acht eigen nummers en vier covers voor. Onder die covers een
prachtige vertolking van George Duke’s Reflections
of My Heart, gezongen samen met drummer Jamison Ross. Naast Ross bestaat de
sterrenbezetting verder uit Victor Gould (piano), Ben Williams (bas), Stacy Dillard (tenor sax), Josh Evans (trompet) en special
guest Sullivan Fortner (piano). Jazzmeia zelf over het album : “Some of these
songs are very cute and fun, but a lot of them are meditations and have deep
meaning that people can listen to, to help free up their minds. People of all
creeds and races, and even all generations because there’s a lot of tradition
in this music. My godfather gave me the best compliment when I played the album
for him. He said, I’m really proud of you because this music sounds like what
Ella or Billie or Nina would have evolved into.”. Love & Liberation is het album van een zelfbewuste en
buitengewoon getalenteerde zangeres.
