Een van de belangrijkste functies van de hersenen is het opslaan van herinneringen, al dan niet belangrijk. Deze geheugenstructuren werken bij ieder van ons anders. Misschien wel het ergste wat iemand kan overkomen is dat diens brein beschadigd raakt. Soms is dat gelukkig maar tijdelijk, zoals bij de vader van violiste Ellie Wilson. Haar vader raakte in coma na een hartstilstand, maar herstelde gelukkig volledig.
Sleutelcompositie Delta op Memory Islands gaat over dit herstel. “As his brain fired up, memories were replayed as if happening for the first time, then filed away in the right places. In Delta, I was thinking about the electrical pulses that transmit this information around the brain. Memories returned slowly at first but then the floodgates opened.”, aldus Ellie.
Een andere compositie die erg dicht bij haar staat is By the Time I Got Back, Pt. 1, het is in de eerste plaats een duet met en een ode aan haar in 1992 overleden grootvader Leslie Wilson. Het gebruikte fragment waarop de stem van haar grootvader te horen is, is afkomstig van een schoolproject. Niet alleen wil Ellie haar grootvader laten voortleven, maar het is tevens een aangrijpende herinnering aan de opofferingen van velen, waaronder haar opa, gedurende de Tweede Wereldoorlog :
“They had decided to send me to the bleedin’ Far East,
Now this time they’re fighting in Europe and we’re winning for a change,
This is a time now in the War when they’d already dropped the atomic bomb.
Do you know what had happened to me? They lost me and reported me as a deserter,
Still stuck in Australia, I can’t even get home to get demobbed.
But eventually I got a draft on a destroyer called the Wessex.
I got on that boat; I didn’t have a bleedin’ penny,
I know it seems a long while ago, but it just seems like bloody yesterday to me, you know?
I mean I was 22 when I went in, just before my birthday
And by the time I got back I was in my twenty-ninth year,
The young years of my married life were wasted
And that was my lot!”
De titel Will I Dream? is een citaat uit de film uit 1984 “2010: The Year We Make Contact”. In deze film wordt boordcomputer HAL 900 confronteert zijn digitale ‘sterfelijkheid’ – alle herinneringen zijn gewist. De meeste geluiden die je hoort zijn afkomstig van Ellie’s viool, gemanipuleerd via FX-pedalen en computereffecten. Overigens wordt er regelmatig gebruik gemaakt van dit soort effecten.
Naast neoklassieke invloeden hoor je bijvoorbeeld in Mindpop heuse beats. Ellie licht Mindpop als volgt toe : “Mindpop is a memory that comes to mind suddenly and involuntarily. This has happened to me a few times recently. Memories so buried I hadn’t even thought about the rather mundane events since the day they happened. The main motif throughout may not sound much like a violin, it’s played through a TC Helicon VoiceLive to create the sound I’ve nicknamed the “choir of angels”.
De composities zijn behoorlijk avontuurlijk en experimenteel. Dat avontuurlijke aspect is trouwens niet zo vreemd, want Ellie speelde een aantal jaren in Stick in the Wheel. Ook maakte ze lang onderdeel uit van de Engelse indie rockband Revere. Een band die ook in Nederland bekendheid genoot, niet in de laatste plaats dankzij hun medewerking aan de befaamde 2 meter sessies van Jan Douwe Kroeske. Het avontuurlijke Memory Islands kroop pijlsnel onder mijn huid en in mijn brein.
