Hushman is een nieuw project van folkmuzikant en singer-songwriter Ewan MacPherson, oorspronkelijk afkomstig uit Liverpool, maar met Schotse, Welshe en Ierse roots. Verhuisde echter in 1999 naar Edinburgh. Ik ken Ewan vooral van het uitstekende folktrio Salt House en van de Keltische fusionband Shooglenifty.
Overigens begon Ewan zijn muziekcarrière ooit in Wales door te spelen in diverse heavy metal bands. Vervolgens kreeg hij interesse in African Township jive, dance en elektronica. Maar heeft intussen allang zijn hart verpand aan traditionele en hedendaagse folk en roots muziek.
Het eerste wat me opvalt en bevalt aan zijn nieuwe album Hushman is de enorme relaxedheid dat het album uitstraalt. De basispartijen van Ewan werden opgenomen in een schuur en in een kerkhal. Ewn ging niet over een nacht ijs, het idee voor album dateert al van 2017, na de release van zijn instrumentale album Fetch!. De eerste opnames vonden plaats in juli 2019 in de kerkhal pal naast zijn huis toen hij net naar Strathnairn was verhuisd.
Ewan over deze bijzonder inspirerende eerste opnamesessie : “I worked in there for about ten days which laid the groundwork for the album, I remember some lovely days with the sun shining through the leaves making moving shadows on the floor. Also there are two roe deer who live out the back of the hall on the hill and we shared the sun together, they became my recording companions, bringing inspiration! They are so beautiful and gold, bronze in colour.”.
Het opnemen van de traditional Beltane staat hem ook nog goed voor de geest : “One other event sticks in my mind, this particular night I decided to move my vocal mic into the main room of the church to record vocals for Beltane, which is a “neo-pagan song”, as I began to sing a few takes I started to feel a bit nervous and kept looking behind me, I had my back to the altar.
I had the feeling there was someone with me but I was alone in the building. As I sang on I had a very extraordinary sensation of being lifted a short way off my feet, I will never know if I was lifted up or not but it felt very odd and I had the distinct impression someone didn’t want me singing there. It was all I could do to pack up and leave with the hair standing up on the back of my neck!”.
Ewan kreeg hulp van niet de minsten, om te beginnen van Shooglenifty collega James Macintosh, die geregeld voor inventieve drumpatronen zorgt. Het uitstekende basspel wordt verzorgd door Ben Nichols. Hannah Read zingt en speelt viool op zes nummers. Verder ook nog bijdrages van Lauren MacColl op (alt)viool, Magnus Lundmark (percussie), Kim Carnie (zang) en Thomas Hein (piano).
De meeste songs schreef Ewan zelf, naast de reeds genoemde hypnotiserende traditional Beltane verder nog de Scandinavische traditional Duke Henry. Ewan produceerde het album zelf op uitstekende wijze.
Tot mijn favorieten reken ik Playing Giants, wat me door het gitaarspel herinnert aan de betreurde Nick Drake. Tekstueel gezien vormt Fionn Regan regelmatig een inspiratiebron, naast Bob Dylan. Ewan over zijn teksten : “Many of my songs are about nature and beauty vs the right wing neoliberal, capitalist, destructive side of humanity. And how many of us are caught in the tug of war between caring for our planet and being forced to make our way in a society that we feel is going in the wrong direction.”. Hushman is een prachtplaat, dat hoge ogen gaat gooien in mijn eindejaarslijst.
